Born and based in South Africa, Hanne-Lizé Delport has built her artistic practice on a resolutely evolving trajectory, in which each new medium enriches the previous one. After studying visual arts, she began her career in stop-motion animation before joining the film industry in 2010 as a set painter and sculptor for film and advertising: this hands-on experience in shaping physical worlds, notably on the film Chronicle (2012), now informs her approach to building digital worlds. In 2018, she embarked on a new chapter by dedicating herself to building worlds in virtual reality, where her passion for nature finally found the space it needed to flourish fully: she loves to infuse the essence of the real world, animals, organic elements, and natural phenomena, into fantastical and immersive landscapes. This approach, which blends the precision of the craftsmanship she acquired on film sets with the freedom inherent in digital modeling, allows her to create a dialogue between the tangible and the imaginary within environments that are both dreamlike and structurally sound. Today, while she continues to build worlds in virtual reality, she is also expanding her practice to contemporary visualization platforms, pursuing her quest for ever-evolving sensory immersion.
Hanne-Lizé Delport’s work has been exhibited throughout South Africa and Europe, and her virtual reality landscapes have also gained recognition across the United States. She notably made a name for herself at the 2022 CES convention in Las Vegas, where she presented an award-winning virtual reality installation. Other immersive pieces of hers have been featured in Forbes magazine, exhibited at the Burning Man festival, and presented at technology conferences across the United States.
