A graduate of York University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Diana Lynn VanderMeulen has developed a resolutely hybrid practice that straddles analog and digital media, where collage, installation, and extended reality constantly interplay. Her work is distinguished by a focus on extended reality and the cyclical use of materials, through which she develops expansive, multisensory environments designed to envelop the viewer rather than simply be observed. Her works draw inspiration from the wetlands, marshes, and aquatic landscapes of North America, which she transforms into dreamlike digital gardens where the organic texture of living things blends with the abstraction of the pixel. Her 2023 residency at the Society for Arts and Technology in Montreal marks a turning point in her practice: there, she has the time and tools necessary to transform her ongoing project, A Boundless and Radiant Aura, into an immersive audiovisual performance alongside her collaborator Stefana Fratila. The resulting show, titled I want to leave this Earth behind, is specifically formatted for fulldome, and the resulting immersive film was nominated for the 2025 Best of Earth Fulldome Awards.

Diana Lynn VanderMeulen has participated in numerous public and DIY projects, with exhibitions at the AGO, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, CADAF in Paris, the Constellations Festival in Metz, the Gardiner Museum, and Idea Exchange. Diana Lynn VanderMeulen has participated in numerous public and DIY projects, with exhibitions at the AGO, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, CADAF in Paris, the Constellations Festival in Metz, the Gardiner Museum, and Idea Exchange. Her practice has also expanded to include several public murals in Toronto, as well as workshops conducted for Nike and the Psychic VR Lab’s STYLY NEWVIEW program, among others. More recently, she was the featured artist at Nuit Blanche 2024 in Toronto, performed with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, at Mutek in Montreal and Dubai, at the New Forms Festival in Vancouver, as well as at Lincoln Center in New York and the Château de Vincennes in Paris, as part of the Neptune’s Valley XR exhibition. She also led a fulldome rendering workshop with Innovative Media Studios at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Doha, Qatar, and has exhibited internationally at Art Playground Buffalo, CultVR in Cardiff, the Katara Planetarium in Doha, and the Synthesis Gallery in Berlin. Her recent projects include a hybrid physical-virtual solo exhibition, Shimmer of a Petal, Now a Mountain Stream, created in collaboration with Sky Fine Foods and ArtGate VR, as well as the augmented reality app Swampy GoGo, which extends a series of two-dimensional mixed landscapes into digital realms; all of these projects reflect a practice that is constantly exploring new mediums for her organic and dreamlike visual language.

Currently, the natural and the synthetic coexist almost everywhere. The exploration of 360 space reveals landscapes and atmospheres that transcend our sense of presence. Remixing techniques and textures, Diana Lynn VanderMeulen uses mixed media collage, painting and sculptural installation to create environments that challenge our perceptions of reality. She uses new digital tools to extend the lifespan and audience of her works of art.

More on digital art

Generative art
Generative art refers to a way of creating artworks using an autonomous system. In digital art, these are usually generated from code and algorithms created by the artist, often with certain predefined parameters or systems. Although these parameters guide the final outcome of the work, generative art is generally a surprising way to create artworks, as the results are often unexpected and the number of possible outcomes can be infinite.
AI
AI art is a branch of generative art that uses artificial intelligence. Unlike other generative artworks, AI artworks use specific complex algorithms and models derived from machine learning. The most common methods for creating AI art today are GANs (generative adversarial networks) or proprietary prompting platforms such as ChatGPT, Sora, Midjourney, or Dall-e.
3D
3D art uses 3D software such as Blender, Cinema4D, Houdini, or video game software such as Unity to create works of art. In 3D works, artists can either arrange assets (the 'objects' in a 3D artwork or world) that they have created themselves or purchased from other creators to create elaborate environments and scenes (an approach to 3D art called 'set dressing'), or specialize in sculpting, which involves creating their own objects and assets.
Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is a specialized 3D technique that allows 3D objects to be created from numerous photographs taken of an object or scene from multiple angles. These photos are then compiled to determine the specific positioning, shape, and dimensions of the object in space, and then converted into a 3D model. Initially developed for engineering and urban planning, photogrammetry has become a way for artists to produce extremely accurate 3D models from real-life images.
Collage
An extension of the traditional, plastic approach to collage, digital collage involves searching for and cutting out multiple images, extracting them from their original context, and recomposing them in a new arrangement to create a work of art. Artists can use their own photographs or find images on the internet.
Illustration
Digital illustrations are created using software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. As with drawing on paper, the artist uses a stylus to sketch a figure or object, usually on a tablet, to construct a scene or artistic universe. Unlike traditional drawing methods, digital illustration is much more forgiving, as mistakes can be easily corrected and drawn elements and objects can be easily moved around within a scene.
Video
Video artworks primarily use a recording camera, but may sometimes include additional post-processing or editing to distort, modify or add additional elements to the image. Some artists use state-of-the-art recording equipment to create macro zoom-ins or time lapses, privileging fidelity to the subject matter. Others use additional softwares to significantly modify or warp the video, creating an alternative perspective on the world that surrounds us.
