Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Enzo Roff currently lives and works in Warwickshire, UK. He is known for his moving ultra-high resolution video still lifes, which combine meticulous observation and framing with opulent compositions to produce a subtle yet dramatic trompe-l'oeil effect. This effect is found throughout his work as a kind of signature. His main sources of inspiration are Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Hopper and Vilhelm Hammershøi, as well as many contemporary photographers and filmmakers.
Enzo trained as a lighting designer at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and is extending his knowledge to his artistic practice. By manipulating the images, he uses natural degradation and pictorial noise to obtain an almost painted visual illusion of appearance. All his works are looped to give the impression of an image in continuous and infinite motion. His work has been shown on screens, in the form of installations and video projections, notably as part of a group exhibition of floral art at the Atkinson Museum in Southport, UK, alongside the work of Gordon Cheung, among others, in the exhibition Cross Pollination.

Between 2010 and 2012, my work as a theatre lighting designer took me to New York. I found myself effectively commuting across the Atlantic for that period. Work afforded me very little free time, but I did get a couple of days off. I spent those precious days wondering around Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights and Jersey City with a camera and tripod, capturing interesting views and street scenes. In this collection I return to those images in an attempt to recreate my memories of that period of my life. What I remember may not be strictly accurate but that’s not important to me. Those coffee bars may not really exist, but I don’t care. This is how I remember it. All my work is designed to loop seamlessly to give the impression of an endless sequence.
