"Love doesn’t look with the eyes, but with the mind,
And so winged Cupid is painted blind."
- William Shakespeare, The Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The Uncouth Forest collection explores what remains of Shakespeare’s beloved Arden Forest. Originally covering most of northern Warwickshire, Shakespeare was born and lived a short distance from the outskirts of the forest. He uses it in many of his works to depict intrigue, magic, mischief and illusion. Enzo Roff returned to this forest throughout 2020 to capture the changes in light and colour as the seasons change and at different times of the day. Roff degrades and reconstructs his images over and over again to get an almost impressionistic painted look of color blocks with confident and sweeping brushstrokes.
