Trained at Digital Hollywood Studio in Tokyo, Mei Tamazawa began her career as a UI designer and developer at major Japanese companies such as Yahoo! and Amazon Japan, before transitioning in 2017 to an independent artistic practice. In 2022, she founded Generative Art Studio, a creative laboratory where she crafts mesmerizing 3D botanical environments. Her practice, which she herself describes as “CG × AI,” combines meticulous craftsmanship with the thoughtful use of artificial intelligence, which she integrates into every stage of her process: generating reference images, structuring her ideas, and assisting with visual composition. Far from being merely an algorithmic fad, this hybrid approach allows her to streamline her work while maintaining the precision of an almost horticultural touch, plant by plant, petal by petal. Deeply inspired by the organic forms and movements of nature, she creates flowers with a surreal and bioluminescent appearance, imbued with a magical, almost otherworldly quality.
Her work has been recognized by the industry on multiple occasions: she was selected as one of Japan’s top 100 motion graphics creators in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, and has received several awards, including the Art Grand Prix and the CSS Design Awards. Since 2017, Mei Tamazawa has been working as a freelancer on visuals for some of Japan’s biggest music festivals, including the Rock in Japan Festival and the Countdown Festival. Her work also extends beyond the music scene into public spaces: in partnership with JCDecaux, her ethereal visuals have been displayed at international airports in three major Chinese cities.
