Data Labellers - my intention to bring spotlight towards a group of exploited and under-resourced labor in the glamorous AI presence. Commissioned by Google Deep Mind to reflect on Pioneer Responsibly for Visualising AI.
Besides geniuses and scientists, AI is heavily human centered, with outsourced workers. Their jobs are repetitive, exposed to harmful content to make sure data is clean and safe for all, and yet extremely underpaid and often matches a certain demographic population that was already under-resourced before AI. I wanted to echo this repetitiveness, and the blurry multi-layers between machine and human in this animation: ordinary fabric textures that we’re familiar with mixed with unceasing human skin waves, moving on top of classic data visualizations that are blurred by different elements. The animation is essentially a boxed object repeating its movement, like labellers in front of their computers, like a machine. AI is full of human fingerprints.
