Gio Mariani is an artist and designer from Brazil, based in the Netherlands. Playfulness, discipline, curiosity and sincerity guide their work, which serves as an active processing of self, feelings and the world. At its heart is pixel art, a medium that mirrors embroidery: an image built thread by thread, pixel by pixel, through countless small decisions. The slowness is the point. Animating frame by frame produces cyclical movement with no beginning or end, a loop that does not demand to be finished; it simply keeps breathing.Trained in graphic design, Gio brings that discipline to composition, the foundation of the work. Scenes are assembled from several distinct frames, memories and photographs set beside surreal or fantastic elements, sometimes seemingly unrelated, held together until they read as a single image carrying a message. Gio thinks of it as graphic design from another dimension: something is clearly being communicated, but the language is not quite ours. Each composition begins as a way of processing an emotion, and once finished it reflects that emotion back, revealing something new. Beyond pixel art, Gio works with watercolour, motion graphics, sound and sculpture.
Gio’s work was included in Los Raros, Las Raras: Nuevas Narrativas del Collage Contemporáneo, an exhibition on new approaches to collage presented by The Weird Show in Valladolid, Spain, in 2024, and featured in the book TzAR: Pixel Art Anthology, edited by Kyle Flemmer. Animated work has twice been selected as Video of the Month at Festival do Minuto in Brazil, and screened at the 15 to 10 International Film Festival in Toronto in 2026.

Ghostly forms swirl around a shared centre, drifting apart and embracing again, over and over. A loop about being close to someone.
