The painting Calliope was created in 1869 by Joseph Fagnani (also known as Giuseppe Fagnani), an Italian-American painter born in Naples in 1819 and who died in New York in 1873. Fagnani was known for his portraits of prominent figures in both Europe and the United States, including royalty and politicians. In 1861, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and later returned to New York, where several of his works, including Calliope, were acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Calliope depicts the Greek muse of epic poetry and eloquence, one of the nine muses in Greek mythology. The artwork is an oil on canvas measuring 110.5 x 83.8 cm (43 1/2 x 33 1/2 inches) and is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
