Enzo Roff

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Enzo Roff currently lives and works in Warwickshire, UK. He is known for his moving ultra-high resolution video still lifes, which combine meticulous observation and framing with opulent compositions to produce a subtle yet dramatic trompe-l'oeil effect. This effect is found throughout his work as a kind of signature. His main sources of inspiration are Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Hopper and Vilhelm Hammershøi, as well as many contemporary photographers and filmmakers.


Enzo trained as a lighting designer at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and is extending his knowledge to his artistic practice. By manipulating the images, he uses natural degradation and pictorial noise to obtain an almost painted visual illusion of appearance. All his works are looped to give the impression of an image in continuous and infinite motion. His work has been shown on screens, in the form of installations and video projections, notably as part of a group exhibition of floral art at the Atkinson Museum in Southport, UK, alongside the work of Gordon Cheung, among others, in the exhibition Cross Pollination.

Entre 2010 et 2012, mon travail m'a emmené à New York. Je me suis retrouvé à faire la navette à travers l'Atlantique pendant cette période. Le travail me laissait très peu de temps libre, mais j'ai quand même eu quelques jours de congé. J'ai passé ces précieux jours à déambuler dans Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights et Jersey City avec un appareil photo et un trépied, capturant des vues intéressantes et des scènes de rue. Dans cette collection, je reviens sur ces images pour tenter de recréer mes souvenirs de cette période de ma vie. Ce dont je me souviens n'est peut-être pas strictement exact, mais cela n'a pas d'importance pour moi. Ces cafés n'existent peut-être pas vraiment, mais je m'en fiche. C'est ainsi que je m'en souviens. Tout mon travail est conçu pour se répéter en boucle, donnant l'impression d'une séquence sans fin.

Generative art
Generative art refers to a way of creating artworks using an autonomous system. Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is a specialized 3D technique that allows 3D objects to be created from numerous photographs taken of an object or scene from multiple angles. These photos are then compiled to determine the specific positioning, shape, and dimensions of the object in space, and then converted into a 3D model. Initially developed for engineering and urban planning, photogrammetry has become a way for artists to produce extremely accurate 3D models from real-life images.
Collage
An extension of the traditional, plastic approach to collage, digital collage involves searching for and cutting out multiple images, extracting them from their original context, and recomposing them in a new arrangement to create a work of art. Artists can use their own photographs or find images on the internet.
Illustration
Digital illustrations are created using software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. As with drawing on paper, the artist uses a stylus to sketch a figure or object, usually on a tablet, to construct a scene or artistic universe. Unlike traditional drawing methods, digital illustration is much more forgiving, as mistakes can be easily corrected and drawn elements and objects can be easily moved around within a scene.
Video
Video artworks primarily use a recording camera, but may sometimes include additional post-processing or editing to distort, modify or add additional elements to the image. Some artists use state-of-the-art recording equipment to create macro zoom-ins or time lapses, privileging fidelity to the subject matter. Others use additional softwares to significantly modify or warp the video, creating an alternative perspective on the world that surrounds us.
