Nate Mohler is a new media artist based in the United States. His know-how ranges from digital painting to generative installations and mapping to sculpture and video. His creations revolve around the technological medium he uses to build conceptual and avant-garde experiences. Nate graduated from UCLA in 2019 with a Bachelor of Art in Design and New Media.
In his creations, Nate blurs the boundaries between real and virtual to incite action and provoke questioning by the viewer. He was commissioned by the city of Culver City to create a fountain of light interacting with the flow of the city’s digital activity. Nate has also collaborated with other artists to create animated sculptures, video mapping, always based on sociological phenomena and the current challenges of our society. Mohler sees each project as an opportunity to create emotions, challenge thought, or support social change.

"Painted Cities" explores the subconscious and imagination of artificial intelligence to create the memory and dream state of a city through the fusion of movement and ink. Digital paintings are created using multiple forms of AI, especially neural style transfer, to fuse Mohler’s videos with ink, texture, and photographs. The series was born out of a desire to immortalize memories, especially of the cities that Mohler visited.
The places in the "Painted Cities" series are all places where I spent time during my media art studies in 2018. The views of each city often resurface in dreams and desires when one tries to escape the mundane pattern of everyday life here in Los Angeles. The cities in my work are real places, but also a figurative representation of them during something like a dream state, an imaginative moment. An ode to the presence a city has on a person. A tribute to architecture, people and culture."
All works are slow and very detailed, intended to be viewed passively and to complete space rather than attract attention.
