Wisse Scheele

Slovakia

Wisse Scheele is a Dutch dancer and multidisciplinary artist currently performing with the Slovak National Ballet. Trained at the Dutch National Ballet Academy from the age of 10, Wisse's artistic path has always intertwined classical ballet with a deep curiosity for technology and visual storytelling. Through his creative platform StudioScheele, he merges dance with digital art, crafting immersive experiences that live at the intersection of motion, design, and emotion. Whether through interactive installations, vivid 3D environments, or experimental dance films, Wisse reimagines the language of movement for the digital age. His work invites viewers into dreamlike spaces where choreography meets innovation, and human expression takes on new, virtual forms. At the heart of every project lies his core passion: to bring movement to life in unexpected, captivating ways.

Wisse’s work has been recognized with several honors, including the Dansersfonds Scholarship, the Gouda Star Youth Award, and the Responsible AI Award from Microsoft during the Goodmesh competition. These accolades reflect his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries while embracing ethical and imaginative uses of technology.

Light Figure #5

Light_Figure__5_Wisse_Scheele_Video.mp4

Light Figures is a digital dance collection by Wisse Scheele that reimagines the human form in motion—where the body becomes light and movement dissolves into space. This five-part video series blurs the lines between ballet and technology, merging Scheele’s foundation as a classically trained dancer with the limitless possibilities of digital art.

Each work captures figures composed entirely of light, dancing in fluid synchronicity with sound. Their gestures—graceful, glowing, and untethered—are not imaginary. They are the direct digital echoes of Scheele’s own choreography, captured through motion-tracking technology and transformed into radiant avatars.

The collection invites viewers into a meditative, almost otherworldly encounter with movement. Like silk swirling in air, the figures drift and pulse in luminous waves, offering a sensory experience that extends beyond the constraints of the physical body or stage.

At the heart of Light Figures is a simple, profound question: What if light could dance? To answer it, Scheele dons a motion capture suit, performing each choreography himself. Every spin, reach, and suspension is recorded with precision, allowing even the subtlest detail of his dance language to be translated into 3D form.

From there, the skeletal motion data is imbued with light—digitally sculpted into dynamic forms that shimmer, dissolve, and evolve. These aren’t abstract interpretations; they are direct manifestations of Scheele’s artistry, rendered in a new medium that transcends the boundaries of traditional performance.

Light Figures is more than a visual spectacle—it’s a deeply personal exploration of identity, expression, and transformation. It reflects Scheele’s lifelong connection to dance and his vision for how it can inhabit virtual worlds. The result is a powerful blend of intimacy and innovation: a digital stage where emotion moves at the speed of light.

More on digital art

Generative art
Generative art refers to a way of creating artworks using an autonomous system. In digital art, these are usually generated from code and algorithms created by the artist, often with certain predefined parameters or systems. Although these parameters guide the final outcome of the work, generative art is generally a surprising way to create artworks, as the results are often unexpected and the number of possible outcomes can be infinite.
AI
AI art is a branch of generative art that uses artificial intelligence. Unlike other generative artworks, AI artworks use specific complex algorithms and models derived from machine learning. The most common methods for creating AI art today are GANs (generative adversarial networks) or proprietary prompting platforms such as ChatGPT, Sora, Midjourney, or Dall-e.
3D
3D art uses 3D software such as Blender, Cinema4D, Houdini, or video game software such as Unity to create works of art. In 3D works, artists can either arrange assets (the 'objects' in a 3D artwork or world) that they have created themselves or purchased from other creators to create elaborate environments and scenes (an approach to 3D art called 'set dressing'), or specialize in sculpting, which involves creating their own objects and assets.
Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is a specialized 3D technique that allows 3D objects to be created from numerous photographs taken of an object or scene from multiple angles. These photos are then compiled to determine the specific positioning, shape, and dimensions of the object in space, and then converted into a 3D model. Initially developed for engineering and urban planning, photogrammetry has become a way for artists to produce extremely accurate 3D models from real-life images.
Collage
An extension of the traditional, plastic approach to collage, digital collage involves searching for and cutting out multiple images, extracting them from their original context, and recomposing them in a new arrangement to create a work of art. Artists can use their own photographs or find images on the internet.
Illustration
Digital illustrations are created using software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. As with drawing on paper, the artist uses a stylus to sketch a figure or object, usually on a tablet, to construct a scene or artistic universe. Unlike traditional drawing methods, digital illustration is much more forgiving, as mistakes can be easily corrected and drawn elements and objects can be easily moved around within a scene.
Video
Video artworks primarily use a recording camera, but may sometimes include additional post-processing or editing to distort, modify or add additional elements to the image. Some artists use state-of-the-art recording equipment to create macro zoom-ins or time lapses, privileging fidelity to the subject matter. Others use additional softwares to significantly modify or warp the video, creating an alternative perspective on the world that surrounds us.
